The Hybrid Racing Yard Karts of the Galletta’s Greenhouse Karting Club fleet:
OCTOBER 2014 - TWENTY-THREE KARTS, ALL TIMING WITHIN 0.66 SECONDS OF EACH OTHER ARE AVAILABLE FOR THE 19TH RUNNING OF THE KLASSIC 200. MOST ARE UNFILLED. WHY DON'T YOU BECOME THE NEXT GALLETTA'S KARTING CLUB DRIVER AND TRY TO BECOME THE NEXT GALLETTA'S KLASSIC CHAMPION?

Many are arrive-and-drive available to rent for gas+parts money, usually $20 a regular 50-70 lap night, more for 200-Lap Klassic. Some are owned by individual drivers in the club. And some are for sale *(or rent) by their owners. The chassis have motors replaced every few years, but usually all are relatively close in speed. The difference is almost always the driver’s experience. If an experienced driver runs it, it can often win. If novice drivers drive them, they usually don’t. Above picture taken before the 2014 Galletta’s Klassic 200, and many karts go unused most weekends, so join us. There’s room on our roster and we’re always looking for good, dedicated drivers who want to have CLEAN FUN racing. The Galletta’s Team karts are available most weeks to either watch or rent during race season at Galletta’s. The team karts listed are karts that have won at least one feature event in our race class. Some are owned by drivers, some are missing from action with parts unknown. Here’s more detail on each:

GALLETTA’S GREENHOUSE RACING TEAM KART ROSTER:

Karts owned, maintained, and raced at Galletta’s Greenhouse Backyard Speedway. Some are exclusive to Chris, Matt or Melissa Stevens, but the rest are available to rent on any given race day. All have won feature races and all are maintained to be competitive by undisputed all-time Oswego Karting master, Matt Stevens.

Galletta’s Greenhouse Racing Team #0: Originally an antique racing kart owned by former club driver (SBS veteran) Cameron Rowe and donated to the club by former club driver Tom Culeton in 2002 for Jesse Vivlemore to race (but he rarely raced it), it has been a quick kart since day one. Rebuilt several times by Wes Stevens. The yellow-and-orange machine has scored many wins with Matt Stevens, Chris Stevens, Kyle Reuter, Gary Miller and others, but the highlight victory was the 2010 Klassic 200 win by Kyle Reuter. Often available to rent.

Galletta’s Greenhouse Racing Team #2: Built from scratch in 1998 by Wes and Matt Stevens but using the cannibalized parts from the OLD Galletta’s #1, the blue-and-silver #2 has had a long history of obscurity mixed with triumphant wins. Originally Chris Stevens’ ride, he won the 1999 Track Championship and Klassic using the machine.
Significantly rebuilt in 2009. Often available as a rental kart on most weekends.

Galletta’s Greenhouse Racing Team #3: Originally a 1980s neon green machine Manco yard kart owned by Dave Scruton and rebuilt several times in the 1990s by Wes and Matt Stevens, the #3 was painted red and yellow to look like one of Matt and Chris’ favorite Oswego Supermodifieds, the Doug Didero Skip Matczak #3 that dominated the Speedway and won 3 track championships and a Classic 200 in the mid-1990s. It is owned and driven by Matt Stevens (but was also driven by his now-wife Melissa Gabel Stevens in 2007). Has the most races, feature wins and Klassic wins of all Galletta’s karts, and Matt swears that despite it’s age, it is the best handling kart of all. His countless wins in it back him up.

 Galletta’s Greenhouse Racing Team #4: Originally a Manco yard kart purchased new for the club new the 1990s and rebuilt several times in the 1990s by Wes and Matt Stevens, the red with yellow number #4 was painted to look after one of Matt and Chris’ favorite Supermodifieds, the Doug Didero/Skip Matczak #4 (which was a clone of the #3 and only seen with that number in 1997 Oswego Classic 200) that dominated the Speedway and won 3 track championships and a Classic 200 in the mid-1990s. It has been driven by Matt Stevens, Wes Stevens and Chris Stevens, although it was occasionally rented out from time to time. Wes Stevens won the 2006 Galletta’s Greenhouse Klassic 150 and the controversial 2008 Oswego Speedway Kartway Gas Stocker Kart Classic. Wes flipped the kart and injured in the 2007 Galletta’s Klassic, and Chris resumed using it as his primary backup kart after as a rental, rookies started wrecking it too much.

 th_20140712-matt-wins-in-gallettas-5  Galletta’s Greenhouse Racing Team #5: Built in the year 2000, it was originally driven by Christopher Galletta Stevens, who piloted it to the 2000-2001 Klassic wins along with the 2000-2001 Galletta’s Greenhouse Track Championships right out of the gate. It has won many feature races at Galletta’s Speedway with drivers such as Chris Stevens, Kyle Reuter, Rob Jimenez, Joe Sereno, Randy Platt and Matt Stevens behind the wheel. Although it ran several races at Oswego Kartway with different drivers at the helm, it never won a race there. It was rebuilt in 2006-07 to be lower to the ground to race at Oswego Kartway and to be less prone to flipping. Often available as a backup.

   Galletta’s Greenhouse Racing Team #6: The #6 started as a built-from-scratch project for Matt Stevens to replace the #3 in 2000. In fact, it was once a maroon and black #3. But… Matt always preferred his old #3’s handling, so was re-numbered #6 and painted gold and brown (it received the much maligned golden turd monicker). It has had its share of wins through the years with different drivers, and is often available for rent on most weekends.

It was first painted silver and red to look like the Booth Racing #61 supermodified, but various drivers kept adding colors, and it later developed silver with light blue highlights. It has always been a fast kart with many different winning drivers (Tim & Justin Galletta, Ryan Coleman, Buddy Cottom, Dick & Nick Dann among others), but it’s most triumphant win came when Super Stock and Supermodified driver Kelly Miller passed both Matt Stevens and then Chris Stevens in traffic with it to a surprise win the 2013 Galletta’s Klassic 200! Often available for rent most race weekends.

 th_2015-07-03-chris-wins-1024 Galletta’s Greenhouse Racing / Chrusher.com #8: Numbered #8 because it was the eighth Galletta’s Greenhouse Racing Team kart built (by Wes Stevens, Matt Stevens and Randy Platt), it debuted in the 2004 season, when Chris Stevens fell in love with the kart’s handling and has been it’s only driver ever since. Chris scored big “Classic” wins at Oswego Speedway and Galletta’s Speedways behind the wheel. Paint job modeled after the Roger Treichler #74 and NY Jets.

  photo 2014-08-lytle-win.jpg Galletta’s Greenhouse Racing Team #9: In 2007, Kelly Miller and Kyle Reuter brought out a black #9 kart and promptly flipped it. In fact, several drivers drove and flipped it until it was given up on and donated to the track. Wes Stevens finally rebuilt it steady enough to not flip by the 2009 season! It is a prolific winning kart, as different drivers such as Ryan Coleman, Jeff Tetro, Fred Collins, Russ Bartlett and Adam Lytle scored elusive wins in it. Often available for rental most weekends.

   Galletta’s Greenhouse Racing Team #01: A former Thunder Island kart purchased from Charles Gibson in 1992 by Chris Stevens, the Black Bart #1 was often driven by Chris , although we played more musical chair races then (Wes, Matt, Jesse Vivlemore and others drove it as well). Deemed too heavy, in 1996 it was stripped for parts (that became part of the #2) and sits at trackside awaiting a rebuild.

It was rebuilt by Matt and Wes Stevens to become Melissa Stevens’ backup, although she now prefers racing it over her other, built-from-scratch #80 kart. Although Melissa wanted Galletta’s removed from the title, it is part of the Galletta’s Team roster.

   Galletta’s Greenhouse Racing Team #33: The “Silver Bullet #33” was built in late 2006 by Wes Stevens under the careful instructions of Matt Stevens to punish all who dared race him on either Galletta’s or Oswego Kartways. It promptly won its 1st race out of the gate before it was even painted. Matt has won MANY races in it at both Galletta’s and Oswego Speedway’s Dirt Kartway, including the Klassic 200, including the controversial 2008 Oswego Kartway Classic, which he DOMINATED and was passed by his father under a yellow flag. Matt splits most of his races between this and his trusty old #3.

 th_2013-08-25-Matt-Wins-in-74_zpsce4b1910  Galletta’s Greenhouse / Chrusher.com #74: Otherwise known as Frankenfreakart due to the numerous rebuilds, it was once a live-axle/2-wheel-drive racing kart. Joe Hayden originally introduced the kart to our races as the Team OHV Outlaw #5 at Oswego Kartway from 2007-08 (until track operator Jim Losurdo barred our division from the Kartway), and raced it until Dick Dann purchased it from him in 2009. Dick then promptly hospitalized someone via spearing a kart at Frozen Ocean with it, then sold it to Chris. Randy Platt, Matt Stevens and Wes Stevens constantly tinkered with it until it was adapted to be race-ready at Galletta’s.

 th_20090803WinnerMelissa-1  Scissors ‘n’ Fur #80 Kart: In 2008, the then Melissa Gabel (now Stevens) commissioned a kart to be built from scratch by Wes and Matt Stevens. A 100% identical clone to her then-fiancee Matt Stevens’ Galletta’s #33, but with bigger bumpers. The kart doesn’t ever seem to handle quite as good as it’s clone, but still has netted feature wins. Although Melissa wanted Galletta’s removed from the title, it is part of the Galletta’s Team roster.

 th_oswegokart20090712win Hockey Racing #00: From 2007-2010 at both Galletta’s and Oswego Kartway, Russ Hockey stormed his way to many top-five finishes and a few feature wins in his self-made Hockey racing #00, a converted yard kart of unknown origin. Medical issues forced Russ to retire at the top of his game, where he was competing for wins any given race (no matter what “Bloata” whispered into his ear). The #00 was sold in 2011 and is probably rusting somewhere, as it is “Missing In Action/parts unknown”.

Ruggio Racing #02: Originally a yard kart rebuilt into a Galletta’s style Racing kart by Dick Dann for his son Nick,  initially numbered #02, and then Dann Racing #68 from 2006-09. Sold in 2010 to Arnold “AJ” Nason and renumbered the Racin’ Nason #35. It was then sold to Billy Ruggio #02, then sold to Billy Truax, Eric Woolworth and re-sold back to Ruggio, who rarely drives it despite it being at the track every week. Confusing, I know. The last three owners have not yet won in it like the 1st two owners did.

   Barrelin Bortel #15: Barrelin’ Brian Bortel brought a converted yard kart to our races in 2005-07, first a blue & yellow and then purple #15 later on. Bortel turned his poor finish and barrel-roll flippin’ struggles in 2004-05 into some impressive wins at both Galletta’s and Oswego Kartways in 2006 before he inexplicably stone cold left the sport in 2007, later selling the kart due to finances. He claims to seriously miss it, but yet never returns.

   Team Maynes Racing #18: Ed Maynes stormed to a handful of impressive feature wins at Galletta’s and Oswego Speedway Kartway between 2004-06 in his #18 converted yard kart (which was sometimes painted neon green, sometimes pink, and sometimes silver). He also built 3 more karts for his sons Chris & Ken and friend Jason Mills. He raced in around 90% of the races during this period. Then, one day he got inexplicably mad, stormed off the track in a huff and we never saw him or his team of 4 karts. Ever again.

Team OHV Outlaw – Melfi Racing #22: A very large yard kart owned by Dave Melfi was rebuilt multiple times into a sturdy bronze & black tank of a racing yard kart that was very effective at the Oswego Kartway’s Gas Stocker division in 2008 with an OHV motor, where he won a handful of mixed-motor feature races. When Oswego Kartway’s track operator Jim Losurdo barred yard kart races, the fate of the #22 kart is unknown.

   Team Doe Racing #26: The inconsistently intrepid racer Shadoe Russell had a “Rubbin’ is racin'” #26 kart and won his only career feature in his in it, which made everybody thrilled because he struggled mightily for three years just trying to finish anything better than last place. However, when his family inexplicably got angry based on lies and exaggeratingly false rumors about what people were allegedly saying behind their backs, they blamed us (despite us helping them compete every single week), slandered us all over to people who never met us (and blocked all attempts to clarify truth from fiction) and they and their team kart never raced anywhere ever again.

Brian and his brother Kevin Galletta have driven it since 2012.

 th_2014-08-10-adam-lytle-wins- Lytle Racing #33c: Formerly the Gary Miller racing #24, the kart was a former Kyle Reuter yard kart that was rebuilt for Galletta’s-style racing by Dick Dann and then adapted further by Wes Stevens. Gary had two identical karts, but tried to rebuild one and scrapped it because it was so bad. Gary and his son won a handful of races in the survivor kart from 2007-2011 until Gary retired for good and sold it to Adam Lytle, who has raced it from 2012-and-up.

  Galletta Bros./Platt-Num Racing #42: Brian Galletta and Randy Platt created a kart from scratch around Brian Galletta’s design of being encased in the cockpit with many metal bars. It is a VERY sturdy kart, but also very big and heavy, and has been unable to crack victory lane because of it. Despite being built to be safe, it has been involved in a handful of crazy bad accidents, including a Tower smash, a greenhouse-busting crash, a front-stretch mishap and a fiery flip crash involving Lytle and Woolworth.

It proved to be a VERY fast kart, but rarely gets raced because Brian sold it only after a year of racing it, and it’s current owner Dave Turner retired from racing after only a few races where a wreck unsettled him. For sale.

   Galletta Bros. #54: Originally the Dick Dann #86, an antique converted racing kart, Dick drove it steadily between 2006-08 at Galletta’s and Oswego Kartway. When Dick jumped ship and abandoned us for pay track karting, he sold the kart to Tim Galletta who numbered it #54 after a significant Wes Stevens rebuild for Tim’s 6’4″ frame. Tim scored some wins until he moved south, and it was sold to D.S. Humphries owner Dave Spanfelner, who also won a few races in it. Like Dann, Dave also abruptly quit the club for pay track racing, and Brian Galletta purchased it for he and his brother Kevin to run. Known as the winningest big man kart in the fleet.

Sweeting Racing #81: Formerly the D.S. Humphries #81, a former yard kart of unknown origins rebuilt (and rebuilt) for Galletta’s racing by Dave Spanfelner in 2012, the kart never found much success and was retired for years until George Sweeting purchased the kart in 2015.

Team OHV Outlaw – Raponi Racing #83: A very large yard kart owned by Eric Raponi was rebuilt multiple times into a sturdy and imposing black tank of a racing yard kart that was very effective at the Oswego Kartway’s Gas Stocker division between 2006-2008 with an OHV motor, where he won a handful of mixed-motor feature races. When Oswego Kartway’s track operator Jim Losurdo barred yard kart races, Raponi joined the pay track classes and the fate of the old #83 is unknown.

Team OHV Outlaw – Billion Racing #57: A very large yard kart owned by Mike Billion was rebuilt multiple times into a sturdy and imposing red-and-black tank of a racing yard kart that was very effective at both Galletta’s and the Oswego Kartway’s Gas Stocker division between 2004-2007 with an OHV motor, where he won a handful of mixed-motor feature races. Billion retired after a few tough spills in the high-set kart and the fate of the old #57 is unknown, although it was rumored to be owned by a driver who was going to race it with us… but they never showed.

 Good Guys Barbershop #88: A retired Thunder Island kart that was originally rebuilt and raced by Larry Phillips as the L&K Small Engine #04 who owned/raced it between 2007-2009, then sold to Kenny Lindsley, then Billy Ruggio, then Eric Woolworth, then Ryan Palmer, back to Eric and finally to Keith Raymond in 2014. *Deep breath… WHEW!* The current owner, Keith Raymond, keeps breaking while leading in the machine.

   Team OHV Outlaw – Mark Miller #007: Was a racing yard kart owned and driven by Mark Miller between 2004-05 at Galletta’s, and 2006-07 at Oswego Speedway’s Kartway during the mixed-motor experiment (that caused many an argument). A large, imposing tank of kart that featured a powerful OHV motor (that made many a Galletta’s Club driver very uncomfortable due to it’s size and undetermined horsepower rating), it has been unseen since 2007, when Miller retired from karting after the high-set kart took a few hard flips too many on both tracks.

   Platt-num Racing #187: This kart has a bit of a long name. Bear with us. The Bobandinator Platt-Num, Pl-Attitude Murder 187 Babymaker mobile. An old race kart frame once owned by Kelly Miller, sold to Brian Bortel, sold to Chris Stevens, sold to Randy Platt and then completely rebuilt with a brand-new rear end, Randy sported a beautiful light and dark blue color scheme en route to a few feature wins in the vehicle. But after making babies left and right, Randy inexplicably retired himself and the kart in 2014, despite living a 1 minute drive away from Galletta’s! It sits motorless trackside awaiting a rebuild.
